Baiju R. Shah is President and CEO of BioEnterprise, a partnership of Case Western, Cleveland Clinic, Summa Health, and University Hospitals. BioEnterprise is a business acceleration initiative to support the growth of bioscience companies. Since 2002, it has helped more than 60 Cleveland companies that have collectively attracted more than $600 million in new funding. Prior to BioEnterprise, Shah was with McKinsey & Company, where he played a leading role in the Growth and Business Building practice. In the community, Shah serves on Boards of The Saint Luke’s Foundation, Great Lakes Science Center, Yale Alumni Association, NorTech, and Summer on the Cuyahoga, and also the Governor’s Workforce Policy Board and Strategic Development Advisory Board. Shah received a J.D. from Harvard and his B.A. from Yale.

Mr. Viscogliosi founded Small Bone Innovations, Inc. (SBI) in 2004 and raised $42.2 million in 2005 – then the largest ever round of VC financing in orthopedics. SBI was recognized by Red Herring – in 2006 – as a Top 100 Technology Company in North America and – in 2007 – a Top 100 Global startup company – the only orthopedics company chosen. SBI was also honored by consulting firm, Frost & Sullivan, as 2007’s Entrepreneurial Company of the Year. In 1999, he co-founded Viscogliosi Bros. LLC a banking firm that has helped 170 companies, including SBi. Mr. Viscogliosi received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters-Honors Causa (D.H.L) from the NY College of Podiatric Medicine, in 2007, and his B.S. in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1984.

Before joining Cytyc, Dean worked for Cambridge Endoscopic Devices as a VP of Business Development and Marketing. Dean began his business career at Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a J&J company marketing advanced medical devices for minimally invasive surgical procedures. During his five-year tenure, he held a variety of positions in management, sales and professional education. Dean received his B.A from Miami University and his M.B.A from Harvard Business School.

He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Pharmasset (NASDAQ: VRUS) and is a member of the Boards of Directors of Catalyst Biosciences, DepoMed (NASDAQ: DEPO), Intranasal, hytomedics, Proteogenix, Proventys, Targacept (NASDAQ: TRGT) and XDx. Prior to founding Burrill & Company in 1994, he spent 28 years with Ernst & Young, directing and coordinating the firm's services to clients in the biotechnology/life sciences/high technology/manufacturing industries worldwide. In 2002, Mr. Burrill was recognized as the biotech investment visionary by the prestigious Scientific American magazine (The Scientific American 50).

Norman Chen joined Fidelity Asia Ventures in 2005 and has over 15 years of experience as a senior executive, entrepreneur and venture capitalist in the healthcare industry in Asia. He began his healthcare career at Baxter International, where he was responsible for sales and marketing of medical equipment and supplies across 13 markets in Asia from 1991-1995. In 1996, Norman founded Asia Renal Care (ARC), a leading provider of kidney dialysis services in Asia. Investors included Fidelity Asia Ventures, Investor AB, Walden International, and Satellite Dialysis Centers, a strategic partner based in the SF Bay area affiliated with Stanford University. As CEO and Vice-Chairman, Norman led the company’s growth over 10 years to over 70 dialysis centers in Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines, Japan, Korea and Malaysia. From 2002-2003, Norman was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Walden International. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from MIT and an MBA from Stanford University.

He was previously Director of Alere Medical and Observer for TorreyPines Therapeutics and Morphotek Inc. Kent has held positions in Scientific Licensing (1999-2000) Clinical Pathology and Safety Pharmacology (1993-1999) at SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Assistant Research Director of Clinical Pathology at Sterling Winthrop Pharmaceuticals (1989-1992) and Assistant/ Associate Professor of Veterinary Clinical Pathology at Louisiana State University. Kent received his DVM and MS from Purdue University, his PhD in Veterinary Clinical Pathology from Louisiana State University, is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, and received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

- Dr. Avshalom Horan is a Managing Partner at the Bridge Investment Fund – a VC based in Cleveland and Tel Aviv, focused on investing in Israeli early stage med-tech companies that are getting ready to launch their US operation. Horan has an extensive background in seed investment and management of technology companies through their early stages. During his service in the Israeli Military Intelligence, he headed a special department overseeing the development of major projects involving state of the art technologies. Horan was the VP of a technology subsidiary of the Bank Leumi Investment Group and has served on the board of directors of several private and public Israeli companies. He founded and directed a technology incubator in Israel where several startup companies were seed funded. Horan is the chairman of Simbionix, a company that was started in that incubator and has later co-located in Cleveland. Simbionix is a lead developer of surgical simulation systems with over $10 million in revenue in 2007. Horan is a venture partner with Tenne, an Israeli Private Equity Fund. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University, and is a decorated Colonel (res.) in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

He was frequently interviewed in the financial trade press including the Wall Street Journal, CNN and MSNBC. Dr. Kovac joined Burrill & Company after retiring from IBM, where she was responsible for the strategic direction of IBM's global healthcare and life sciences business. She led a team in developing the latest information technology solutions and services, establishing partnerships and overseeing IBM investment within the healthcare, pharmaceutical and life sciences markets. In more than 20 years at IBM, Dr. Kovac held a number of executive management positions, including vice president at IBM Research, where she was instrumental in launching the Computational Biology Center and the massive Blue Gene supercomputer project. Starting with only two employees as an emerging business unit in the year 2000, Dr. Kovac successfully grew IBM's life sciences business unit into a multi-billion dollar business, and one of IBM's most successful ventures to date with more than 1500 employees worldwide. Her main focus at Burrill is developing and executing investment strategies for leading edge technologies that are contributing to the transformation of medicine and healthcare including: personalized medicine, the use of IT in healthcare, stem cell research, medical devices and diagnostics, and bio-nanotechnology. In addition, she will work as part of the Burrill International Group team building the company's life science focus on emerging economies such as China, India, Malaysia and the Middle East.

Frank Kung is a founder and managing member of the Palo Alto, CA based Vivo Ventures, LLC, a venture capital management firm established in 1996, currently with more than $650MM under management. He joined Cetus Corporation in 1979, co-founded Cetus Immune Corporation in 1981. In 1984 he co-founded Genelabs Technologies, Inc. where he served as Chairman and CEO until 1995. He brought the company public in 1991, and built it to a 175 employee international biotech company. Dr. Kung received his B.S. in chemistry from the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, his Ph.D. in molecular biology and MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. He currently serves on the board of directors of a number of biotechnology companies.
